General Resources

You can find a lot of information about English terms, styles of writing, etc here at English Language Arts Handbook for Secondary Students
If you are having trouble with a concept it is a good place to start and look. There is a glossary near the end as well as an index to find the topic on a particular page.

Diploma Preparation

It is a good idea to look at old diploma exams to practice for the writing part of the exam. (The link is below.) Remember there are three parts: the visual, the literary response and the persuasive response (either a speech or a letter).

Read the following instructions and then open the link below in another tab so you know what to do.

Look at the question, think about your response and create a mind map. For the literary response and the persuasive response do the following:
1. Decide which is your strongest idea and make that the last paragraph of the body. Your second strongest idea is the first body paragraph and your weakest idea goes in paragraph two of the body.
2. Create a topic sentence for each section of your mind map.
3. Now try to make a thesis statement using a phrase or word to summarize each body paragraph.
4. Write an introduction that starts more generally and ends with the thesis statement.
5. Write each body paragraph remembering to link it back to your thesis/controlling idea.
6. Write a conclusion which starts with a re-statement of the thesis. It will then become more general

Note: Do not stray from the question. Be sure it all links to your thesis. Be sure you answer the question and use key words from the question in your response.

Look at the example responses to the old diploma exams and see if you answered in a similar way. See your teacher if you get stuck.
